One Christmas Eve, Santa Claus falls off the roof while delivering presents to a disbelieving Santa Claus Scott. As a result, Scott has to fill his place. Although the job of Santa Claus is more difficult than he thought, Scott realizes that it is the most important responsibility in the world. Side by side, his world is changing for the better.
Who is Scott?
Scott sells toys. Although he himself does not believe in the existence of Santa Claus, he continues to support his child, Charlie's belief in Santa. Ex-wife Laura and husband Dr. Neil both want Charlie to stop thinking about Santa because they stopped believing in him as children after not getting their Christmas presents.
How does Scott become Santa?
On Christmas Eve, Scott and Charlie go out to dinner after Scott burns the turkey he made. After returning, they go straight to bed. Their sleep is interrupted by a sound from the roof. The two find an old man dressed as Santa. Scott yells at her, causing her to fall off the roof.
The old man magically disappears, but leaves his business card and suit behind. The card reads: “If something happens to me, wear my suit.
The sleigh and deer are still on the roof. Scott reluctantly puts on his Santa costume after Charlie asks him to do so.
What happens after Scott becomes Santa?
Scott and Charlie give out gifts for the rest of the night. The head elf, Bernard, takes them to the North Pole, where Scott is briefed on his responsibilities as Santa Claus. He was told that because he was wearing a suit, he had to fulfill all of Santa's obligations. In short, whether Scott likes it or not, the new Santa has been appointed.
Scott is given 11 months to prepare before reporting to the North Pole. Unable to control the events, Scott goes to bed confused. Little does he know that his world will never be the same again.
How does Scott change?
He asks Charlie to keep his visits low-key when he tells everyone his dad is Santa.
Strange things happen to Scott. His hair is turning gray. His beard grows quickly after shaving. Cravings for milk and cookies increase and gain weight overnight. Moreover, he begins to treat children like Santa Claus. And in no time, Scott becomes a fully-fledged Santa (at least looks-wise).
Despite the obvious changes that match his Santa personality, Scott continues to live in denial that he is not Santa.
Does Scott find out he's Santa?
Laura gets Scotts visitation rights revoked out of court due to Scott's increasingly erratic behavior. Scott visits Charlie anyway. Charlie shows him the snow globe he got from Bernard, and Scott immediately realizes that it's actually Santa Claus.
Scott convinces Laura and Neil to let him have some private time with his son. As they talk, Bernard arrives and the three set off for the North Pole.
Is Scott fulfilling his duties as Santa Claus?
When they get to Laura's house, Scott is arrested and Charlie is waiting for him in the sleigh. However, Scott soon finds himself outside with the unusual help of elves during a jailbreak.
After returning from prison, Scott realizes the importance of family to Charlie. Seeing Scott's nice gesture, Laura and Neil are convinced that Scott is Santa Claus. Laura destroys the visitation rights documents, assuring Scott that he can visit Charlie at any time.
Bernard tells Charlie that he can use the snow globe to call his father whenever he wants. Laura and Neil receive their Christmas presents from Scott - restoring their faith in Santa. Scott sets off to deliver the remaining presents with Charlie, saving Christmas.
