'Love & Gelato' was released on Netflix a few days ago to add to its growing romcom portfolio. Although it did not impress the critics, it found its buyers among die-hard fans of the genre. The comfort that comes with watching a story you know how it will end is also worth savoring.
There are a few things that Love & Gelato does a little differently than its peers. However, these twists are not “twists” in a cinematic context, but refreshing deviations.
Lina's journey of self-discovery was more of an innate adventure than a strictly external feeling. His mother wanted to go to Rome to meet Howard and understand that even if you meet the right person at the wrong time, it won't end well.
What happened between Ale and Lorenzo? Did Ale cheat on Lina?
To answer the second question first, no. Ale did not deceive Lina. The girl we saw with him was an old friend, as he had explained to Lorenzo when he returned from lunch. He had already made plans and Ale was too soft to cancel.
It would be disastrous for us to speculate beyond that, because the film doesn't really portray Ale in a bad light. In fact, it confirms that his feelings for Lina are probably sincere. Wrong timing defies cosmic encounters, and it turned out not to be.
When Lorenzo first brought Lina down from La Nuvola on his "death bike", we sensed the animosity between him and Ale. Only when Lorenzo goes to a baking competition in Florence do we learn the truth,
Lorenzo's mother worked in the school cafeteria. One of Ale's friends called Lorenzo's mother a derogatory and insulting word that starts with the letter "d" and is slang for gay women.
Although Ale was standing right next to him, he did nothing. He gave Lorenzo a blank look that infuriated him. Ale didn't value her friendship with Lorenzo and instead chose not to anger her group of "cool" friends by standing up for Lorenzo's mother.
Who is Lina's biological father? Why did Lorenzo go to Florence?
Howard reveals that Lina's biological father is actually Matteo Rossi, a former photography major at their university. As he explains in the book, the encounter happened at the wrong time for him.
Rossi also left the city and her alone to handle the situation. Rossi is "X" from the diaries that Lina's mother is obsessed with. Howard was the biological father, but he made it clear in the dinner scene.
As for the second question, Lorenzo went to Florence to compete in a cooking competition that looked like an Italian master chef. She always wanted to be a chef and so we saw work parties and home cooking to hone her skills. Unfortunately, he doesn't succeed, but he learns a valuable lesson in being more expressive.
Why did Lina's mother ask Lina to call Howard "Daddy"?
Sweet, kind, caring and intelligent - this is how Lina's mother describes Howard in her book. Although he did not have a physical relationship with her, he later realized that he had made a mistake with Rossi.
Howie had a big crush on Lina's mom, but she didn't reciprocate and he didn't tell her. And his assessment of the two men was correct. When Lina worked up the courage to go to Florence and see her biological father, Rossi made up an excuse and avoided her.
Lina went into her office to look him in the eye and walk away. And Howard was always around Lina. He helped her settle down, talked to her, calmed her down when she lost hope, fulfilled her duties as a real father. This is also the reason why Lina's mother wants Lina to call Howard her father.
Love and Gelato Ending: Whose end did Lina end up with? What's the secret to Nonna's gelato?
The answer to the first question is vaguely related to the second. So Lina did not end up with anyone. Explosion. He chose himself. This is what his mother tried to show him in her diary.
He didn't send Lina to Italy to find a lover or a good husband. Instead, she wanted Lina to follow her own path in life and not be afraid to make bold choices. Lina wasn't actually retracing her mother's steps; he was creating new ones - his own.
Lina did not choose Ale or Lorenzo, although she maintained a loving friendship with him as he stayed by her side as did Howard.
Ale, like Rossi, did not take care of himself, and even though they were in the same city, he broke up with Lina.
